Crabby Patties or Don't Look Gift Crabs in the Mouth

It all started with a gift from Alaska, air-shipped frozen, crab.  A lot of it.  Bob is not too happy with shellfish, or any fish really, unless it's ahi tuna, small amounts of mahimahi or ono.  But he is a Sponge Bob fan, so I said we were going to have Crabby Patties!

Coincidentally, I was at the hairdresser's that day,  flipping through magazines, waiting for my turn, and spotted a recipe for "crab cakes".  Yes and almost copied it out by hand.  But, having joined the techno age, realized in time that my iphone would do it for me. Perfect timing for our crab.

I emailed my friend, Linda, to see if she would like to help with all that prying out of meat from shells, for a good share of it. Thus a crabby party was hatched.  Good kitchen shears were useful, ice pick, pliers and nutcracker.  We set to work, ending up with 3 pounds of shelled crab meat.  And relaxed after with glasses of lemon mead and chips.

Sorry Bob for a very crabby week-end, ha ha.  We had not only the Crabby Patties, but crab with melted butter, lemon and new potatoes, Crab Quesadillas and Crab Salad Niçoise.   I hear Linda enjoyed her share as well.

Crab Salade Niçoise
There was a very large pot of shells left which were contributed to my banana patch.  And before someone tells me I should have made stock with them, that was done first.  And thrown out after I decided there was not enough room in the fridge or freezer for it.

Note: Instead of oyster crackers, I used crushed Masala chips.  The patties were fried up in my cast-iron skillet and served with eggs for breakfast.  Oh boy, they were, no joke, the best I've ever had.   Apologies to Sam Choy's Breakfast, Lunch and Crab. The quesadillas were awesome as well.  Will share the good times with Beth Fish Reads for her Weekend Cooking meme.  Do feel free to contribute a post on something food related and  link up thru the weekend.

Oh I can only imagine how delicious those patties were -- nothing like very fresh shellfish. Great idea to get some help with the picking the meat out of the shells.

I love crab too, and especially crab cakes. I live not too far from the coast in northern California. It hasn't been a good year for local crab here, but the guy at the fish counter told me this week that crab would be coming in this next week. Things are looking up!

A great amount of work that was greatly awarded! I bet that everything was absolutely delicious--did Bob end up enjoying the crabby weekend or was he a crab about it?

He's usually very good about what I cook, just eats a minuscule portion of whatever he doesn't care for. Then has peanut butter, bread and jam after. Needless to say I ate a lot of crab, and enjoyed it.

Yum! I love good crab cakes and it's been far too long since I've had any. The Sponge Bob reference cracked me up. My oldest son loved Sponge Bob and the sound of the show was like nails on a chalkboard for me!

Our family adores crab - fresh with just a little butter. It is part of our annual Christmas Eve dinner and I typically buy 12-15 pounds (with no leftovers). I'm not sure I will ever have enough crab in-house to make these delicious crab cakes.

I love the title of this post! I'm not a fan of anything fishy except shrimp, tuna, Cod and Mahi Mahi. I have had a few crab cakes that were ok, and those ingredients sound like they would be good.

I am a big fan of shell fish and I do love a good crab cake. Your version and recipes sounds so very good. I have never made crab cakes using fresh crab like this though. Glad you posted the photos.

Very fun! Being a Pacific Northwest raised person, I adore crab and good crab cakes so I would have been in heaven with all of that lovely crab meat! ;-)
